Men's Lacrosse Outlasts Christopher Newport
WASHINGTON- The Catholic University of America men's lacrosse team (3-2, 0-0) earned their third victory of the 2009 season, defeating non-conference foe Christopher Newport (3-2, 0-0) Saturday afternoon by a score of 16-7. The win was also the 70th of head coach Brooks Singer's career.
Leading the way for the Cards was Tyler Catalani (Frederick, Md./St. John's MD), who poured in four goals and two assists in the win. The duo of Jimmy Sinnott (Blue Bell, Pa./LaSalle) and Chris Fuccillo (Patchogue, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) combined for six total goals (three apiece) and teammate Kyle Brant (Silver Spring, Md./St. John's) knotted two goals. Midfielder Tom Scotto (Spring Lake, N.J./St. Rose) recorded 6 groundballs, while teammate Andrew Baldwin (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) added five. Goaltender Sean McKenna (Rockville,Md./Good Counsel) had another busy day in the net, stopping 13 total shots in the contest.
Brant and Catalani struck first for the Cardinals, opening up a 2-0 lead for the home team in the first ten minutes of play. The Captains fired back with two goals of their own, but CUA responded by scoring the next five consecutive goals, taking a 7-3 lead after the first half
CUA continued to feed off their first half momentum in the third quarter, as the Cards erupted for six goals to grab a 13-6 lead. Emotions ran high and penalty flags flew in the final stanza of the afternoon, but the squad remained poised and recorded three more goals before the final buzzer sounded.
The Cardinals will travel to Immaculata next Thursday, March 19th for a 6 p.m., contest.
