Men's Lacrosse Edges Immaculata
WASHINGTON- Despite a late surge from the Immaculata offense, the Catholic University men's lacrosse team soared to an 8-7 victory over the Mighty Macs in Thursday's away contest. With the victory, the Cards now stand at 4-2 on the year, while Immaculata falls to 1-4.
Jimmy Bitonti (Potomac, Md./Good Counsel), Tyler Cataloni (Frederick, Md./St. John's MD), and Jimmy Sinnott (Blue Bell, Pa./LaSalle) were a triple threat in the Cardinal victory, recording two goals each. Catalani and Bitonti also tallied an assist apiece. Mark Saxton (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) and Chris Fuccillo (Patchogue, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) each added one goal, and Fuccillo also led the team's defensive effort with three caused turnovers. Andrew Baldwin (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville ) earned 7 groundballs, while goaltender Sean McKenna (Rockville,Md./Good Counsel) stopped five shots in the net.
The two teams found themselves at a 2-2 deadlock after the first 15 minutes of play, but CUA outscored their opponent 4-0 in a tremendous second and third quarter effort to put them ahead 6-2 going into the fourth.
Immaculata's Joe Keller and Dante Tuscai recorded back-to-back goals, but Saxton quickly answered back by scoring off of a pass from junior Kyle Brant (Silver Spring, Md./St. John's). The Mighty Macs responded by outscoring the CUA 3-1 in the final minutes of the game, but the Cards were able to hold them off until the final buzzer sounded.
The squad returns to their home turf on Sunday, March 22nd for a 12 p.m., match up against non-conference opponent Penn State- Abington.
