Mariners Edge Men's Lacrosse
WASHINGTON- In their third Landmark Conference game of the season, the Catholic University men's lacrosse team gave up a 7-5 heartbreaker to USMMA Friday evening. With the loss, the Cardinals drop to 1-2 in the Landmark, 7-5 overall.
Mark Saxton (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) led the way for CUA with two goals to go along with two groundballs. Kyle Brant (Silver Spring, Md./St. John's), Chris Fuccillo (Patchogue, N.Y./St. John the Baptist), and Mike Scotto (Belmar, N.J./St. Rose) each chipped in with one goal apiece. Brant also contributed two assists, while goalie Sean McKenna (Rockville,Md./Good Counsel) scooped up five groundballs and had seven saves in the loss.
USMMA opened up the scoring as Brennan Dougherty found Robert Atkinson at the 8:44 mark of the first quarter. CUA quickly responded by scoring the next three consecutive goals to give them a 3-1 advantage midway through the second stanza. The Mariners then recorded back-to-back goals of their own to tie things up before the teams headed into halftime.
The Cardinals got their offensive momentum rolling just fifty seconds into the third quarter, with Saxton finding the back of the net off a pass from Brant. USMMA then managed to outscore CUA 4-1 for the remainder of the game, earning the 7-5 decision before the final buzzer sounded.
CUA returns to the field on Wednesday, April 15th as they take on conference foe Goucher College for a 4 p.m., home match up.
