Men's Lacrosse Shuts Down Hornets
WASHINGTON- The Catholic University men's lacrosse team showed off their offensive prowess on Wednesday afternoon, defeating the Hornets of Shenandoah University 12-4 at Cardinal Stadium. With the win, CUA's record improves to 6-4, 0-1 Landmark, while SU drops to 4-3, 1-1 CSAC.
Chris Fuccillo (Patchogue, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) had an outstanding performance in the win, finding the back of the net on four separate occasions. The freshman also dished out one assist to go along with three groundballs. Jimmy Bitonti (Potomac, Md./Good Counsel) and Kyle Brant (Silver Spring, Md./St. John's) earned two goals apiece for the Red and Black. Bitonti also chipped in two assists in the win. Tom Scotto (Spring Lake, N.J./St. Rose) and Mike Groh (Walpole, MA./Xavarian Bros) each led the team with 10 and 7 groundballs, respectively. Goalkeeper Sean McKenna (Rockville,Md./Good Counsel) finished with 7 saves in the net.
Fuccillo stormed through Shenandoah's defense in the first half, scoring three of his four goals in the opening 30 minutes. CUA's tenacious defensive efforts held the Hornets scoreless throughout the first two quarters, and they held a comfortable 4-0 lead going into the halftime period.
Bitonti took his turn on the offensive end, scoring back-to-back unassisted goals in the first six minutes of the third stanza. CUA's Drew Saine (Davidsonville, Md./Archbishop Spalding) connected with Brant with 56 seconds left to give the Cards a 7-1 advantage.
Shenandoah managed to shift offensive momentum in their favor in the fourth quarter, but the Cards continued to roll. A SU goal at the 48 second mark brought the score to 11-4, but CUA was able to hold off their opponent as the final minutes ticked away.
The Cards return to the field on April 4th on 2:30 p.m., as they travel to Susquehanna University for their second Landmark Conference game.
