Goucher Downs Men's Lacrosse
WASHINGTON- The Catholic University of America men's lacrosse team suffered a 9-5 setback to conference rival Goucher College on Wednesday afternoon, dropping their record t to 7-5 overall, 1-3 in the Landmark.
CUA was led by freshman Mark Saxton (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) who tallied two goals for the Cardinals. Justin Schaufler (Bernardsville, N.J./Bernards), Tyler Catalani (Frederick, Md./St. John's MD), and Mike Scotto (Belmar, N.J./St. Rose) each contributed one goal apiece in the loss. Chris Fuccillo (Patchogue, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) and Tom Scotto (Spring Lake, N.J./St. Rose) also scooped up four groundballs each. Sean McKenna was at the heart of the Cardinal defense, stopping 18 shots in goal on the night.
Goucher quickly jumped out to a 3-0 lead in first 17 minutes of play. The Cards finally found the back of the net midway through the second quarter, as Scotto recorded his sole goal of the afternoon. The Gophers responded with back-to-back goals of their own, taking a 5-1 lead at the half.
GU's first half momentum carried through into the third quarter, as the Gophers quickly scored twice just five minutes into the period. A Catalani goal at the 6:35 mark brought the Cards to within five, but the Gophers struck again with 34 seconds left to give them an 8-2 advantage going into the fourth.
CUA finally hit their offensive stride in the final stanza of the game. Saxton's unassisted goal at the 14 minute mark got things rolling for the Cardinals. The Red and Black outscored their opponent 3-1 in the closing minutes of the match, but CUA was unable to pull away with the victory.
The Cards return to action on Saturday, April 18th, as they host conference foe Scranton University. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m.
