Men's Lax Falls Short in Overtime on Senior Day, 9-8
WASHINGTON-- The CUA men's lacrosse team fell to Scranton University Royals in a heartbreaking overtime loss, 9-8. Catholic now moves to .500 overall at 7-7 and 1-4 in Landmark play and sit in the fifth spot in the conference. The Cardinals saw five different players score and won the ground ball battle 26-24 in a game that was played down to the wire.
Catholic University jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first quarter but saw that lead disappear when Scranton tied things up with 5:40 left in the peiod. Jimmy Sinnott (Blue Bell, Pa./LaSalle) and Jimmy Bitonti (Potomac, Md./Good Counsel) combined for four goals in the first half as the Cards went into the locker room up 7-5 on Senior Day. Both defenses stepped up as So. Goalkeeper Sean McKenna (Rockville,Md./Good Counsel) only allowed three goals in the entire second half. The sophomore goalie has managed to stop 110 shots so far this season and has a save percentage over .600.
With things tied up at eight at the end of regulation, the Royals came out firing with three shots on goal with one of them being the game-winning goal in overtime. This game marked the final home game for the 2009 seniors including Kyle Brant (Silver Spring, Md./St. John's), Jim McCabe (North Wales, Pa./LaSalle ), Devin Dolan (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial), Brian Sheridan (New Hyde Park, NY/Kellenberg), Nick Lehan (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg Country ), Tim Rettalia (Bayshore, N.Y./Bayshore ), Matt Barbieri (Gaithersburg, Md./St. John's DC ) and Chris Saxton (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron).
Coach Singer and the squad will travel to Pennsylvania Tuesday, April 20th to battle York College. The game is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m. and last time these two teams met it was an epic game that went an NCAA-record seven overtimes but saw Catholic come up short 10-9.
