Cardinals Keep Streak Alive
CUA's men's lacrosse team improved to a perfect 5-0 on the season Wednesday afternoon with a 13-12 victory over the Marymount University Saints (2-5) at Cardinal Stadium. CUA jumped out to an early 6-2 lead in the first quarter, and held off a late MU run to solidify the win.
Sophomore Marc Saxton opened up the scoring for the Cardinals, finding the back of the net off a pass from Jimmy Bitonti at the twelve minute mark. The Saints evened the score just three minutes later, but CUA’s Chris Fuccillo capitalized off a Marymount penalty by giving the Cards a man-up goal at the 7 minute mark. CUA finished the period by going on a 4-1 run, as Mike Scotto, Fuccillo, Saxton, and Mike Groh all managed one goal apiece.
CUA carried their offensive rampage into the second quarter, as Bitonti notched another goal just 30 seconds into the period. MMU’s Chris Wascak tallied another goal for the Saints at the 13 minute mark, but Fuccillo immediately responded by scoring his third goal on the night. Saxton and Jimmy Sinnott each scored before the halftime buzzer sounded, and the squad took a comfortable 10-4 lead at the break.
The red-hot Fuccillo was once again an unstoppable force for the Cardinals as he scored goals four and five in the third quarter. Marymount staged a late comeback, outscoring CUA 5-1 in the final stanza. The damage had been done, however, as the home team held off the Saints for a 13-12 victory.
Fuccillo led all scorers with five goals in the contest. He also contributed two groundballs and one caused turnover. Saxton and Groh recorded three and two goals, respectively, while Bitonti added one score and two helpers in the victory. Sean McKenna earned another win in goal with four saves on the night. Rob Ryan was also a tough defensive force, finishing with three caused turnovers and one groundball.
The Cards will look to continue their winning ways as they host York College on March 20th at 2:30 p.m.
