York Snaps Men’s Lax Winning Streak, 9-7
WASHINGTON- A 5-2 run by the York College Spartans proved to be the downfall of the Catholic University men’s lacrosse team, as CUA suffered a 9-7 loss at Cardinal Stadium Saturday afternoon. With the loss, CUA drops to 5-1 on the year, while York improves to 3-5.
The Cardinals and Spartans traded goals in the first quarter, as Chris Fuccillo struck first with an unassisted goal at the 13 minute mark. York fired back with back-to-back goals of their own, but CUA’s Marc Saxton tied the score at 2-2 to finish up period one.
YC heated things up in the second and third quarters, outscoring the Cardinals 5-2. Jimmy Bitonti and Fuccillo helped keep the squad in the game with the only two goals of those periods.
CUA refocused in the final quarter of the day, as Bitonti converted off a pass from Tyler Catalani with 12 minutes remaining. Catalani then brought the Cardinals within one after connecting with Saxton, knotting the score at 6-7. The Spartans managed to outscore CUA 2-1 in the final minutes of play, solidifying the 9-7 victory for the visiting team.
Fuccillo once again led the Cardinal attack, recording three goals to go along with one groundball and one caused turnover. Bitonti chipped in two goals and three groundballs of his own, while Saxton and Catalani rounded out the scoring with one goal apiece.
Tom Scotto won 12-19 face-offs while also garnering a team-high of ten groundballs. Ryan Doyle caused two turnovers in the loss, while goalie Sean McKenna stopped eight shots in the net.
CUA will return to action on Tuesday, March 23, as they host Washington and Jefferson at 4:30 p.m.
