Cards Fly Past W&L
WASHINGTON- The Catholic University of America men’s lacrosse team added another win to their record Tuesday afternoon, defeating Washington & Jefferson 13-4 at Cardinal Stadium. CUA improves their record to 6-1 on the year, while W&J drops to 3-4.
Mike Scotto got things started for the Cardinals, scoring an unassisted goal just eleven seconds into the game. Teammate Chris Fuccillo then took advantage of a man-up situation by knotting a goal of his own at the six minute mark to put the Cards ahead by two. The Presidents finished up the first period by scoring two consecutive goals, but CUA’s Mike Groh gave Catholic the advantage by converting a pass from Sean Fitzpatrick.
The squad began to fuel the offensive fire in the second quarter, as Tyler Catalani finished a Marc Saxton pass for a 4-2 edge. CUA then outscored the visiting Presidents 3-1 to finish out the first half, taking a comfortable 7-3 lead at the break.
Catalani opened up the third quarter with another unassisted goal to put the Cards up 8-3. W&L showed it’s last signs of a comeback with a final goal at the 10 minute mark, but CUA scored the last five goals of the game to secure the 13-4 win.
Fuccillo once again led the Cardinal attack, recording three goals and four groundballs on the night. Groh, M. Scotto, and Catalani each tallied two apiece, while Saxton and Jimmy Sinnott each added one. M. Scotto also chipped in three assists to go with seven groundballs.
Tom Scotto won 19-21 face-offs and scooped up 12 groundballs in the contest. Denver Conley managed two caused turnovers, while Sean McKenna collected 10 saves in the win.
The Cardinals will return to action on Saturday, March 27, as they host conference opponent Moravian College at 2 p.m.
