Men's Lacrosse Trounces Shenandoah, 14-4
WINCHESTER, Va.- The CUA men's lacrosse team earned a dominating 14-4 win over Shenandoah University Tuesday evening, boosting the team's already impressive record to 8-2 overall.
Senior Mike Groh scored the first goal of the afternoon, sparking an unyielding offensive attack that gave the Cards a comfortable lead in the opening stanza. The duo of Chris Fuccillo and Marc Saxton helped extend the lead to 6-2 by the end of the first quarter.
CUA continued to roll in the second, as Mike Scotto, Groh, and Jimmy Sinnott recorded consecutive goals to further stretch the lead. The Hornets finally notched their third goal with four minutes left in the second, but the Cardinals scored two more times and took a 12-3 before the halftime buzzer sounded.
The third and fourth quarters remained relatively quiet for both teams, as Catholic's Ryan Doyal and Jimmy Bitonti rounded out the scoring for the afternoon. CUA's tenacious defensive efforts allowed just one goal in the second half, as the Cardinals ran away with the 14-4 victory.
Fuccillo had another strong performance for the Red and Black, finishing with three goals, one assist, one groundball, and one caused turnover. Groh and Sinnott each tallied two goals in the win. Additionally, Groh dished out a team-high of two assists. Along with scoring one goal on the night, Bitonti scooped up six groundballs to go along with two caused turnovers. Sean McKenna added four saves in the win, as his record improves to 8-2.
CUA will return to action this Saturday, as they host conference foe Susquehanna University at Cardinal Stadium at 2:30 p.m.
