Men's Lax Edges Susquehanna on Senior Day
WASHINGTON- The Catholic University men’s lacrosse team used a late run to surge past the visiting Susquehanna Crusaders at Cardinal Stadium Saturday afternoon. With the win, CUA’s record improves to 2-1 in Landmark play, 9-2 on the year.
The Crusaders nabbed an early 2-0 lead after scoring two unanswered goals in the first eight minutes of play. Catholic’s Marc Saxton finally found the back of the net at the four minute mark, bringing the Cards within one by the end of the first quarter.
CUA looked to sophomore Chris Fuccillo in the second stanza for an offensive spark, as he opened up the quarter with back-to-back unassisted goals to give Catholic the lead. Tyler Catalani helped extend the lead to two midway through the period, but the Crusaders fired back with two consecutive goals of their own. Catalani secured a 5-4 lead for the Cardinals with 49 seconds in the first half.
Susquehanna came out hot in the third quarter with two unanswered goals to take the lead. It was all about Catholic in the fourth, however, as the home team used a balanced attack to quell the Susquehanna comeback. The Cardinals finished regulation with a 5-1 run to secure the 11-7 Senior Day victory.
Fuccillo once again led the Cardinal squad with four goals, two groundballs, and two caused turnovers in the win. Catalani, Saxton, and Jimmy Bitonti each tallied two goals apiece, while Mike Groh added one.
Rob Ryan managed two caused turnovers in the victory, while Tom Scotto was 12-17 in face-offs. Sean McKenna had another busy night in the net, allowing just seven goals while stopping 11 shots. His record improves to 9-2 overall.
CUA will travel to Goucher College on Wednesday, April 21, for a 7 p.m., meeting with another Landmark conference foe.
