Men's Lacrosse Edges Scranton, 7-3
SCRANTON, Pa.- The CUA men’s lacrosse team (11-3 overall, 4-2 Landmark) finished its regular season play on a high note this weekend, defeating the Royals of Scranton University 7-3 on Saturday afternoon.
Midfielder Chris Fuccillo once again started things off for the visiting Cardinals with an unassisted goal four minutes in. Scranton responded by netting back-to-back goals of their own, but Catholic’s Mike Scotto evened up the score with an unassisted goal with just over a minute left in the first quarter. Both teams were scoreless in the second stanza, and went into the halftime period deadlocked at 2-2.
Jimmy Bitonti gave Catholic the advantage with the first and only goal of the third quarter. Teammate Jimmy Sinnott helped extend that lead with back-to-back unassisted goals. Scranton found the back of the net once more during a man-up situation, but the CUA defense would not allow a Royal goal for the rest of the afternoon. Pat Duffner and Mark Saxton put an exclamation point on the game by netting two Cardinal goals in the final minute of play.
Sinnott led the balanced attack with two goals and one groundball in the win. Bitonti, Scotto, Saxton, Fuccillo, and Duffner tallied one apiece. Scotto and Bitonti also managed nine and five groundballs, respectively. Tyler Catalani also had a solid performance by dishing out a team-high of two assists.
On the defensive end, Steve Harrington and Ryan Doyle each chipped in two caused turnovers each, and combined for eight groundballs. Goalie Sean McKenna finished the night with 13 saves.
CUA will now travel to Drew University on Wednesday, May 5, as the number three seed in the Landmark Conference Tournament.
