Men's Lax Advances to Landmark Semi-Finals with 14-5 Win Over Drew
MADISON, N.J.- The Catholic University men's lacrosse team earned a solid 14-5 victory over conference rival Drew University in the Landmark semi-final game Wednesday afternoon. With the win, CUA improves to 12-3 on the year, while Drew finishes their season 8-7.
Both teams traded goals for the first two quarters, but the Cards managed to build an 8-5 lead by the end of the third. Mark Saxton and Groh added two goals apiece to help extend the lead in the third period, while Pat Duffner added one.
CUA then exploded offensively in the final stanza, netting six unanswered goals to seal the 14-5 win. Bitonti managed three goals in the final fifteen minutes, while Duffner and Groh added two and one, respectively.
Catholic out-shot its opponent 47-34 and scooped up 11 more groundballs. Both squads were 11-22 in faceoffs, but the Rangers committed nearly twice of the amount of turnovers as did the Cards.
The Cardinals were led by the dynamic duo of Groh and Bitonti, who combined for nine of the team's 14 goals. They also added two groundballs apiece.
CUA's Pat Duffner also had a stand out game, notching three goals and an assist in the victory to go along with one groundball. Saxton rounded out the scoring for the squad with two goals of his own.
Catholic was also a force to be reckoned with on the defensive end, as the team combined for eight caused turnovers. Steve Harrington and Rob Ryan each tallied two. Goalie Sean McKenna managed 11 saves in the win.
The Cardinals will now travel to either Goucher or USMMA on Saturday, May 8, for the Landmark Conference Championship game.
