Cardinals place second in Landmark Conference poll

WASHINGTON – CUA men's lacrosse placed a close second in the 2011 Landmark Conference preseason poll, released on Tuesday.  The poll consists of votes from the six head men's lacrosse coaches and sports information directors at each league institution that sponsors the sport.

The Cardinals placed second to Goucher College by only eight points, coming in with 37 points to Goucher's 45.  Last year Goucher became the first Landmark men's lacrosse team to have an undefeated season.

The third, fourth, and fifth spots were also close with only three points separating the schools.  Merchant Marine Academy placed third with 25 points, University of Scranton placed fourth with 24 points, and Drew University was fifth with 22 points.  Susquehanna University came in sixth in the poll with 12 points.

CUA had an impressive 2010 season, making it to the Landmark Conference Tournament and reaching the championship game for the first time ever.  The Cardinals finished 12-4 overall with a 4-2 mark in the conference.

This year CUA will lean on reigning co-Landmark Conference Player of the Year Chris Fuccillo, who scored a team high 45 goals last season, as well as top scorers Jimmy Sinnott and Tyler Catalani.

CUA has already played three times this season, posting a record of 2-1.  The Cardinals will return to action on Saturday, March 5 when they host Gwynedd-Mercy inside Cardinal Stadium.  The opening face-off is set for 1 p.m.
