Since his hiring in 1998, Head Coach Brooks Singer continues his
quest to establish this program as a highly competitive team within
the NCAA Division III and the newly formed Landmark Conference.
Building on the successes of previous seasons, Singer believes the
2010 squad will continue to take the Cardinals to the next level.
The team has won 40 games in the past five seasons, an improvement
from just five victories in the first and second seasons combined.
Over the years, he has coached multiple players who were selected
to the Landmark All-Conference team, as well as the Capital
Athletic All-Conference team. In 2007, Connor Kelly was selected as
CUA's Senior Athlete of the Year. In addition, in that same year
Jerry Clifford was selected by Inside Lacrosse/Face-off Magazine as
a preseason All-American.
Coach Singer's philosophy encompasses a positive balance between
academics and athletics to allow for success both on the field and
in the classroom. He works hard to encourage his players to succeed
as “student-athletes.” His players reflect the spectrum
of academic fields on campus, from architecture and engineering to
business and social science majors. In terms of academics, 2009
marked a record year for Coach Singer, and one he hopes will set
the standard for all subsequent teams. The team finished the
semester a few hundredths below a 3.0 GPA, with 25 players above
that mark and 10 above a 3.5 GPA. It is a testament to their hard
work and desire to be successful, something Coach Singer emphasizes
all year long.
Coach Singer is very proud to have coached multiple Academic
All-Conference players each year, as well as a selection to the
Venison Academic All-American team, Timothy Lambert in 2000. The
primary goal of Coach Singer and the entire lacrosse coaching staff
is to prepare each student-athlete for life after college, as well
as to recognize the contributions that each individual brings to
the team.
Singer’s passion for the game and emphasis on academics stem
from a wide variety of playing, coaching and academic experience.
Originally from Long Island, N.Y., Singer played at the University
of Arizona under Coach Mickey-Miles Felton. As a captain for the
Wildcats, Singer was selected on multiple occasions as a U.S.
Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association All-Star and was a Division I
North/South All-Star nominee. As a midfielder, Singer ended his
college career with one of the top Division I face-off winning
percentages. After graduating in 1995, Singer earned joint law and
Master’s degrees from Catholic University. While attending
graduate school, Singer led the Cardinals club lacrosse team to
success. In 1998, Singer was named head coach of the first Cardinal
varsity men’s lacrosse team. Since then, he has strived to
build a program that the University and its students are proud to
support. He also coaches with the Madlax All-Star teams and is the
Director of CUA's Capitol Lacrosse Camp during the summer months,
and is presently serving on the NCAA Division III Polling
Committee.
In addition to his lacrosse responsibilities, Singer is employed as
a Senior Investigator for the U.S. Department of Justice in the
Civil Rights Division, and resides with his wife Natalie, along
with his dogs Ellie Mae and Daisy Sue, in Washington, D.C.
Dan Ambrose enters his six year coaching at
Catholic University, serving as the Head Assistant Coach and the
Offensive Coordinator.
Among his many responsibilities, he coordinates practices, and
takes care of scheduling and daily preparations for coaches and
players.
The 2010 season will mark the 16th season that Ambrose has coached
lacrosse at the youth, high school and college levels. Prior to
joining CUE, he was the head coach at South Lakes High School in
Reston, Va., and the assistant at Southlake Carroll High School in
Southlake, Texas. Ambrose has continued to use his experience and
energy to help the Cardinals reach higher goals each season. He
graduated from Summit High School playing for the New Jersey State
Champion Summit Hilltoppers. He then went on to play at the
University of Delaware. Ambrose received his B.S. in
Biology/Spanish from the University of Nebraska and his M.B.A. from
the University of Texas-Dallas.
Ambrose also coaches with the Madlax All-Star teams and is
Co-Director of the Capitol Lacrosse Camp during the summer months.
He currently works and resides in Oak Hill, Va., and lives with his
wife Sandy, daughter Alex, and dog Piper.
Mike Borsz is a native of upstate New York who attended Hobart College in Geneva, N.Y. He graduated in 2003 with a B.A. in sociology. Borsz was a three year starting goalkeeper for the Statesmen and helped the team earn two NCAA tournament appearances during his time at Hobart. As a two-time All-Patriot League goalkeeper and team captain, Borsz finished his collegiate career with an appearance in the elite North-South All-Star Classic. Since his graduation, he has coached several English club teams, worked with the West Genesee High School team, and prior to joining the CUA staff, was an assistant coach at Colgate University.
Borsz, who previously worked as an Admissions Counselor in the
Office of Admissions at CUA, currently works in the CUA Athletics
Department as an Assistant Athletic Director and Recruiting
Coordinator, as well as an Assistant Men's Lacrosse Coach. In his
4th year with the Cardinals, he is the team's Defensive
Coordinator, and also works as the Goalie Coach.
In addition, he is presently pursuing his Masters in Education
Administration from CUA. He resides with his wife Karen in
Washington, D.C..
Nick Taylor graduated from Farleigh Dickinson University in 2008, with a B.A. in Communications Studies. Taylor was a four-year starter for the Devils Lacrosse team and captained the team in both his junior and senior seasons.
This is Taylor’s 2nd year coaching with the
Cardinals program. As a collegiate player, he was selected to the
All-Middle Atlantic Conference 1st Team as a defenseman in 2008.
His coaching experience includes coaching with the Morris Select
All-Stars in 2007 and 2008, as well as with the Madlax All-Star
Teams during the summer months. He has also coached in various
clinics and fall leagues as well. Originally from Newark, Del.,
Taylor attended Newark High School where he was a two-year captain
and was selected All State Honorable Mention in 2004, in addition
to being a three time high school All Conference selection.
Taylor recently graduated from American University with a Masters
Degree in Public Communication. He currently works for Catholic
University in the Office of Admissions as an Admissions Counselor.
He serves as the Co-Defensive Coordinator for the Cardinals squad,
and he currently resides in Washington, D.C..
