CUA downs Goucher, ties school record with 7th straight win

TOWSON, Md. – CUA ran its winning streak to seven on Tuesday evening with a 2-1 win over Goucher, and in the process tied the school record for the most consecutive victories.  Mike Brennan scored the Cardinals first goal and Ben Fleri netted the game-winner in the 74th minute to keep CUA unbeaten within the Landmark Conference.

Brennan got the Cardinals on the board in the 7th minute off an assist from Brian Maher for an early 1-0 CUA lead.

Goucher's first shot came two minutes later from Elijah Lais, but it went high, as did Thomas Adair's attempt at the 18:48 mark.

CUA's next shot did not come until the 34:53 mark when Fleri looked to put the Cardinals ahead by two, but Steve Baum made the save for the Gophers.

With less than two minutes to play until halftime, CUA was awarded a corner kick, but the Cardinals were unable to capitalize and took their 1-0 lead into intermission.

Early in the second, Fleri took another shot, but his try went high.  Several minutes later Brennan had a look, but Baum made the stop for Goucher.  Fleri then tried again but had his shot blocked.

At the 73:25 mark Fleri took a feed from Kevin Romano and made it a 2-0 game, with his fourth goal of the season.

The Gophers made the final minutes interesting when Brandon Weiner scored at the 83:33 mark, but CUA's defense did not allow the Gophers to get off a single shot for the rest of the way en route to upping its record to 11-3 overall.

The Cardinals outshot Goucher 16-5, including 10-2 in the final 45 minutes, and CUA was awarded three of the five corner kisks in the match.  In goal for CUA, Torsten Meuschke finished with two saves, while Baum recorded six stops for the home team.

CUA's seventh straight win ties the school record, which was set in 2008.

CUA remains on the road for its next match when the Cardinals head to Pennsylvania on Saturday to face the Royals of Scranton.  Match time is set for 1 p.m.
