Cardinals remain unbeaten in conference play, down Juniata 3-1

WASHINGTON – The Cardinals remained unbeaten within the Landmark Conference with a 3-1 win over Juniata on Saturday afternoon.  After CUA took an early 1-0 lead, the Eagles tied things up late in the first half only to see the Cardinals score twice in the second to pull away.  CUA now sits at 10-3 overall and 4-0 in the conference, having won six straight matches.

Mike DiMarco netted the first of his two goals on the day when Mike Brennan fed him with a terrific pass at the 10:40 mark of the opening half.

CUA kept the pressure on from there, with five shots in a span of eight minutes, but Ezra Cassel made all five saves for Juniata.

With less than four minutes to go until halftime, the Eagles pulled even on a Jeffery Gring goal that came on a rifle of a shot from 30 yards out.

Following halftime, the Cardinals wasted little time in regaining the lead when Brennan scored off a beautiful lead pass from Hunter Horvath 1:05 into the second half.

20 seconds later Brian Maher looked to add to CUA's lead but his shot hit the post.

Dane Azeles' shot at the 57:11 mark for Juniata was stopped by the Cardinals' keeper Torsten Meuschke, while Maher's attempt four minutes later was blocked.

DiMarco sealed the win for the Cardinals when he took a pass from Alex Sagastume and ripped a shot into the back of the net at the 76:06 mark for a 3-1 CUA lead.

CUA finished with a 21-6 advantage in shots and a 5-3 lead in corner kicks.  Meuschke sent back five shots in goal, while Juniata received 11 stops from Cassel.

The Cardinals return to action on Tuesday evening when they travel to take on conference rival Goucher.  Start time is slated for 7 p.m.
