WASHINGTON – Coming off two straight Landmark Conference championships, the CUA men's soccer team has been voted second in this year's preseason poll, announced on Wednesday. The Cardinals went 11-6-4 a season ago, reeling off 11 straight matches without a loss at one point.
Merchant Marine Academy, last season's top finisher during the regular season, has been pegged this year's favorite after the Mariners collected 74 points in the poll. CUA was next in line with 67 points, followed by Drew with 62 and Susquehanna with 59. Rounding out the poll are Moravian (32), Scranton (32), Juniata (20) and Goucher (18).
CUA returns two All-League selections from a season ago, including the conference Rookie of the Year Ian Smith and Mike DiMarco. The Cardinals posted a 3-1-3 record within the Landmark in 2010, and then proceeded to win a pair of matches on the road to claim their second consecutive conference crown.
CUA opens its 2011 season with a pair of tough matches at the CNU Tournament in Newport News, Virginia. Action gets started on Friday, September 2 when the Cardinals take on the hosts, Christopher Newport at 7:30 p.m. The next day CUA will face Virginia Wesleyan at 5.
