Cardinals move into first place with 2-1 win at USMMA

KINGS POINT, N.Y. – CUA moved into sole possession of first place in the Landmark Conference on Saturday after downing Merchant Marine Academy 2-1.  Mike Brennan gave the Cardinals a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute and Ben Fleri scored the game-winner in the 65th minute to improve CUA to 8-3 overall and 3-0 in the league.

After a scoreless opening 20 minutes of action, Brennan put CUA on top when he netted his team-leading sixth goal of the season at the 21:28 mark.

That wound up being the lone goal of the first half as CUA took its 1-0 lead into intermission.

In the second half the Mariners pulled even when Hollis Irvine scored in the 57th minute.

Eight minutes later Fleri put the Cardinals in front for good with his score at the 64:28 mark.  Mike DiMarco assisted on the goal.  It marks the second straight match in which Fleri has scored the game-winner.

CUA's defense did the rest from there, keeping USMMA off the scoreboard to vault into sole possession of first place in the standings.

The Cardinals finished with an 11-9 advantage in shots, while Merchant Marine Academy led in corner kicks, 5-1.

Torsten Meuschke played all 90 minutes in goal for the Cardinals and stopped one shot, and Mariners keeper Gary Poulin sent back one shot of his own.

CUA will play at home twice this week, beginning on Wednesday evening when the Cardinals play host to McDaniel inside Cardinal Stadium at 7:30 p.m.  On Saturday, October 15 CUA will return to Landmark Conference action with a match vs. Juniata at 1.
