Brennan's game-winner lifts CUA to win in 2 OT
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – One day after falling to nationally ranked Christopher Newport, CUA bounced back with an exhilarating 2-1 double overtime win over Virginia Wesleyan. Mike Brennan scored the game-winner for the Cardinals, off an assist from Earl Hamilton, who scored CUA's first goal of the evening in the first half.
Following a scoreless first overtime session, Brennan ended it in the second extra period when he took a pass from Hamilton and found the back of the net with just under eight minutes remaining.
Hamilton had made it 1-0 35:16 into the match when he scored following a corner kick by Hayden Pond.
CUA had only one more shot the rest of the half, and the score remained 1-0 at halftime.
Three minutes into the second half the Marlins knotted the score at one with a goal by Ricardo Brown. Jordan Elgin assisted on a play that followed two earlier shots by Virginia Wesleyan, including one that hit the post.
The Cardinals totaled only five shots in the second half, including a header by Pond and another attempt by Ian Smith, but both were off the mark and eventually the teams headed for overtime.
In the first OT, CUA took just one shot but it went high. Virginia Wesleyan also had just a single shot, which came from Josh McNamara with under a minute on the clock, and Cam McGrory made the stop for CUA.
In the second OT, Hamilton netted the game-winner, and the Cardinals went home victorious.
Both teams finished with 16 shot attempts, while Virginia Wesleyan won the corner kicks battle, 10-6. In goal for CUA McGrory made seven saves, and for the Marlins, Jay Cooble also made seven stops.
CUA will be back in action on Wednesday afternoon when the Cardinals head to Virginia to take on Shenandoah. Match time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
