CUA welcomes Dickinson in season opener on Saturday
WASHINGTON – After an intense preseason filled with tough practices and a pair of scrimmages, the CUA men's soccer team is set to open its 2012 season on Saturday. The Cardinals are coming off a year in which they won 14 matches and advanced to their fourth consecutive Landmark Conference championship.
CUA Head Coach Travis Beauchamp is entering his sixth season and discussed what has led to his program's consistency. "The key is our guys have bought into the system that we're trying to coach, and they do a good job of holding one another accountable. Plus, we have good players."
Beauchamp then gave his thoughts on how preseason camp has gone up to this point. "Practice has been going well. It was tough this year because we had an opportunity to play at George Mason (in a scrimmage), and that's an opportunity we weren't going to pass up, so we had to maneuver a few things around that."
Senior Mike Brennan, last year's Landmark Conference Offensive Player of the Year, shared his thoughts on how the Cards' preparations have gone. "It's gone real well. We have a strong returning class and some strong freshmen. I think it's been the best camp since I've been here."
Junior Ian Smith, who totaled four points last season, added his thoughts. "We've seen a lot of dedication from the freshmen already. Everything is meshing together pretty well. We just have to learn to play together a little more and we should be good."
The Cardinals open their season on Saturday, September 1 when they play host to Dickinson. Start time is set for noon.
"I think the team is excited," Beauchamp said. "Not only to play another team, but a quality team such as Dickinson. They got to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season and have been selected as the preseason favorite in a pretty difficult Centennial Conference, so I think the guys are excited."
