CUA moves up to 7th in region, readies for conference tournament
WASHINGTON – Riding a five-match winning streak, CUA moved up two spots this week in the NSCAA Regional Rankings, checking in at No. 7 in the Mid-Atlantic. The Cardinals downed Salisbury and Drew last week with a pair of shutouts and enter this week's conference tournament as the No. 2 seed.
CUA began last week by downing Salisbury 2-0 at home. The Sea Gulls came into the match ranked seventh in the South Atlantic Region. The Cardinals then shut out Drew 1-0 in New Jersey to finish the conference slate at 6-1.
CUA now moves into the conference tournament, where it will host third-seeded Scranton on Thursday afternoon. The Cardinals and Royals played only two weeks ago with CUA claiming a 1-0 win over then-unbeaten Scranton.
The win was one of four consecutive shutouts the Cards have put together during their five-match win streak.
Senior Mike Brennan leads CUA offensively, with seven goals, four assists and 18 points. Junior Ian Smith is next in line with six goals and 16 points, while Early Hamilton and Ben Fleri have added four goals apiece.
Torsten Meuschke is CUA's top goalkeeper, totaling 34 saves in nearly 980 minutes of work. The sophomore has posted three shutouts on the year.
No. 25 Scranton enters the tournament with a 13-1-2 record, with the lone loss coming to CUA. The Royals lead the conference in points (105) and assists (31), with Bill McGuiness' 24 points topping the individual leaderboard.
McGuiness leads Scranton in goals (9), with Kevin Kozic (7) and Rich Loeffler (5) next in line. In goal for the Royals, James Dillon has played over 1,100 minutes and stopped 33 shots, posting a 0.80 goals against average.
CUA and Scranton will get going at 3 p.m. on Thursday. The winner will then meet the winner of the Drew – Susquehanna semifinal, on Saturday afternoon in the championship. CUA has reached each of the last four championship matches, winning two titles during that time.
