Cardinals fall at McDaniel
WESTMINSTER, Md. – CUA's streak of three straight road wins came to an end on Wednesday as the Cardinals (8-5) fell to McDaniel 3-0. The Green Terror scored twice in a span of 35 seconds in the opening half, and then added an insurance goal in the second to improve to 5-7-1.
After both teams had few chances during the early going, McDaniel got on the board in the 25th minute when Shane McCracken took a feed from Andrew Hofmeister and put the Green Terror in front 1-0.
35 seconds later, Mike McClain scored his fourth goal of 2012 when he booted in a loose ball to put the home team in front by two.
The Cardinals were only able to get off one shot for the remainder of the half, which came from Hayden Pond at the 44:12 mark and was saved by Zach Nibbelink.
CUA came out more aggressive after halftime, getting shots from Alex Laprade, Earl Hamilton and Nico Bartolomeo during the first few minutes, but one was saved and the other two were off target.
A header by Hamilon at the 65-minute mark was high, as CUA continued to look for its first score.
Max Rutherford made it a three-goal advantage for the home team in the 72nd minute off a feed from Ruben Vaca.
CUA continued to attack, but the Cardinals were unable to score.
The Cardinals' final shots came from Kevin Romano and Nick Civetti in the 89th minute, but the first went high and the second was saved.
CUA finished with a 19-14 advantage in shots, and the Cardinals were awarded three of the five corner kicks.
Cam McGrory stopped six shots in goal for CUA, while Nibbelink did the same for the Green Terror.
CUA heads to Juniata for its next match, which will take place on Saturday afternoon beginning at 3:30 p.m.
