CUA picks up 2-0 road win over Moravian in conference opener

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – CUA opened up Landmark Conference play with a 2-0 road win over Moravian on Saturday afternoon.  Hunter Horvath netted his first score of 2012 and Ian Smith scored his fifth of the year to help the Cardinals improve to 5-3 overall, while dropping the Greyhounds to 2-5-1.

CUA controlled the match, outshooting Moravian 19-5, including a 10-2 margin in the opening half.  The Cardinals were also awarded 12 of 16 corner kicks on the day.

Moravian was awarded a pair of corner kicks early on, but CUA’s defense held the Greyhounds without a shot.

With 19 minutes gone, Paul Lewis looked to put CUA on the board, but Moravian’s Mike Brand was there for the save.

CUA was awarded back-to-back corner kicks around the 21-minute mark, but the Greyhounds defense held serve and did not allow the Cards to get off a shot.

With 37 minutes gone, Horvath scored his first goal of the season to put CUA on top 1-0.

That wound up being the final shot for either team in the opening half.

Just 1:57 into the second half, Smith netted his fifth score of the year as CUA opened up a two-goal advantage.

Soon after, Moravian’s Lewis Cooper took a shot, but his attempt went wide.

A corner kick by Tyler Zimmerman at the 58:33 mark led to a Mike Brennan shot for CUA, but Brand was able to make the save for the Greyhounds.

With less than ten minutes to play, Moravian’s Andrew Arcell looked to cut into the Cardinals lead, but his shot went wide.  One minute later, Austin Niekrasz’s header did the same.

CUA held the Greyhounds without a shot for the remainder of the match to open league play with a win.

Brand totaled eight saves on the day for the home team.

CUA returns to the pitch on Wednesday evening when the Cardinals face Marymount on the road.  Start time is set for 7 p.m.
