WASHINGTON – The Cardinals picked up a big Landmark Conference win on Saturday, downing Merchant Marine Academy 3-2 at CUA Soccer Field. CUA enjoyed leads of 2-0 and 3-1, before holding on for its eighth win of the season. Justin Oloriz, Earl Hamilton and Nick Civetti handled the scoring for the Cardinals who are now 2-1 in the conference.
Less than 10 minutes into the match, Oloriz put CUA in front 1-0 when he took a feed from Ian Smith and found the back of the net.
A header by Ethan DaPonte at the 24:53 mark was high, while Smith's shot three minutes later went wide.
The Cardinals final shot of the opening half came from Ben Fleri at the 40:30 mark, but it was high, sending the teams into halftime with CUA leading by one.
CUA started the second half much like it began the match, scoring quickly, with Hamilton netting his fourth goal of the season. Smith notched his second assist of the afternoon and the Cardinals found themselves in front by two.
USMMA cut into the lead at the 62:47 mark when Kurt Olsen scored off a feed from Kyle Arestivo to make it 2-1.
Six minutes later CUA answered, when Civetti took a nice pass from Brennan and scored the Cards' third goal of the day. The sophomore then ran into the crowd and hugged his mother, who was watching from the hill behind the goal.
With less than 10 minutes to play, the Mariners made things interesting when Ryan Gardner netted the team's second goal of the day.
That made for an intense final few minutes of play, but the CUA defense did a nice job of limiting USMMA's opportunities and the Cardinals held on for win No. 8.
CUA finished with a 27-11 advantage in shots, and a 5-3 lead in corner kicks.
Torsten Meuschke picked up the win for the Cardinals in goal, sending back three shots, while USMMA's Stephen Fucito stopped nine shots.
The Cardinals return to action on Wednesday when they travel to face McDaniel. Start time is slated for 4 p.m.
