WASHINGTON – CUA bounced back from a tough loss over the weekend with a 2-0 shutout of Washington College on Wednesday. The Cardinals jumped on top of the Shoremen with a Mike Brennan goal in the eighth minute, and Ian Smith sealed the win with a score in the 19th minute.
Just eight minutes into the match, Brennan was awarded a free kick, and the CUA senior took advantage, blasting the shot into the far left corner of the goal to put the home team in front 1-0.
A little over 10 minutes later, Smith added to the lead when he took a great pass from Earl Hamilton and knocked in his team-leading sixth goal of 2012 to make it 2-0 Cardinals.
That wound up being the only offense CUA needed, but it did not stop the Cardinals from looking to add to their lead.
Back-to-back shots by Chris Larson near the 40-minute mark were both saved by Tyler Cabot, while Luke Scarchilli's header with less than four minutes to play in the half went high.
Early in the second half, CUA's Ian Smith looked to add to the Cardinals lead, but Cabot saved his shot.
At the 55:05 mark, Hunter Horvath had a terrific chance from right in front, but his shot hit the crossbar, keeping the Cardinals lead at two.
The CUA defense played well throughout, limiting the Shoremen to only 11 shots on the day. The Cardinals finished with 18 shots and four corner kicks, while Washington College was awarded three corner kicks.
Cam McGrory picked up the win in goal for the home team, stopping three shots on the day, while WC goalkeeper Cabot sent back nine shots.
CUA will return to action on Saturday when the Cardinals host Merchant Marine Academy in a crucial Landmark Conference showdown. Start time is set for noon.
