WASHINGTON - The Catholic University men's soccer team punched its ticket to the 2013 Landmark Conference tournament by defeating Juniata College 2-0 on Saturday, Oct. 26 in Washington D.C.
The Cardinals stay undefeated in conference play, improving to 4-0-1 in the Landmark, and 11-3-2 overall. Juniata falls to 11-4-2 and 2-2-1 in the Landmark and is currently in a tie for the fourth.
Ranked No. 6 in this week's NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division III Men's Mid-Atlantic Poll, the Cardinals currently hold the No. 2 spot in the conference standings, trailing only Susquehanna, with two games left to play.
Less than five minutes into the game, Hunter Horvath (Southlake, Texas/Southlake Carroll) bent a ball behind the Juniata defense for Nico Bartolomeo (Pewaukee, Wisc./Pewaukee) who took a touch to control the pass then fired a shot to the bottom left corner for the first goal of the game.
Bartolomeo's goal was the only one of the first half, as the Cardinals went into intermission with a 1-0 lead and a 5-to-1 advantage in shots.
Horvath stayed in on the action as the second half got underway, sending a ball from just inside midfield deep into the Eagle goal box that took a bounce before Kevin Romano (Freehold, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) headed it home for a 2-0 lead in the 54th minute.
Torsten Meuschke (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) picked up six saves in the win, and recorded his second shutout of the week and sixth of the year.
The Cardinals return to action at Scranton (9-2-4) for another Landmark Conference tilt, scheduled to kickoff at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2.
