WASHINGTON – Midfielders Hunter Horvath, Kevin Romano, and defender Ben Fernandez received their second post-season awards as the trio of Cardinals were named to the NSCAA/Continental Tire Mid-Atlantic All-Region Team on Monday.
Horvath and Romano were named to the All-Region 2nd Team, while Fernandez nabbed a spot on the 3rd Team. All three were named 1st Team All-Landmark on Nov. 13 as Fernandez was also tabbed the Defensive Player of the Year.
Horvath was an instrumental player for the Cardinals, the junior started all 20 games at central midfield. His presence and ability to distribute the ball through the midfield was a big reason for the Cardinals' 12-6-2 record and trip to the NCAA Tournament.
Wrapping up a terrific career in the black and red was midfielder Kevin Romano. This is the senior's first All-Region selection, after being named 1st Team All-Landmark for three consecutive seasons, including one Landmark Defensive Player of the Year in 2012. Romano earned three Player of the Week awards this year including the Landmark and ECAC Defensive Player of the Week awards on 10/7 for his efforts in shutting out Moravian. The following week he was named the Landmark Offensive Player of the Week after scoring back-to-back game-winning goals against Susquehanna and McDaniel.
Fernandez was a critical piece in the Cardinal back line, starting all 19 games he appeared in. The Cardinals defense was terrific all season, and was a vital in earning CUA the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament. In large part to Fernandez's leadership, Catholic allowed just 4 goals in 7 conference games en route to a 5-1-1 record.
The Cardinals led the Landmark with three All-Region selections, Susquehanna also had three honorees, while Scranton and Drew followed with two selections apiece.
