2000 Season Preview
After winning a school-record 11 games last season, the Cardinals are looking to break that record and compete for the 2000 CAC Championship.
"While the 1999 season marked the end of some great careers, the fall brings forth the dawn of higher expectations for the underclassmen," Coach Scott Racek said. "The freshmen and sophomores will have to rise to the occasion like many of them did last year."
CUA returns nine starters and eight additional letterwinners from last year. Senior captain Pat Heenan and junior captain Pat Hanley anchor a midfield that should give opposing teams problems. Junior forwards Gregg McGuirl, who led the Cardinals with 18 points on seven goals and four assists, and Jason Arce (17 points on eight goals and one assist) give CUA a strong 1-2 scoring punch.
A trio of sophomores, Adam Kuemmel, David Pires and Michael Corrigan, return on defense to a club that posted two shutouts on the road in 1999. Coach Racek, who has added much-needed depth this year, expects his freshmen to compete for significant playing time.
Sophomore Corey Wright (.812 save percentage) and junior Todd Magin (.737 save percentage) both played significant minutes in goal last year and are expected to wage a fierce battle for the starting position.
The 2000 schedule brings some new competition mixed with traditional rivals. CAC rivalries with St. Mary's (Md.), Salisbury State and Mary Washington have brought out the best in both teams. Non-conference opponents include Washington & Lee, Averett and Washington College.
