Pioneers Abandon Game With
CUA wins with a 3-0 lead when the game abruptly ended in the 78th minute
WASHINGTON - CUA men's soccer (3-5-1, 1-2 CAC) handily beat the Columbia Union Pioneers (2-7-1) Sunday afternoon at DuFour Field. After two major injuries and three goalkeepers, the Pioneers walked off of the field at 77:30 in protest to a foul resulting in a penalty shot for the Cardinals. The game was considered official because the abandonment took place after the 75th minute.
CUA controlled the offensive end of the field for most of the first half. An injury sidelined keeper Francis Tucker midway through the stanza, so Columbia Union opted to bring in Se Eun Park another keeper who was previously out also with an injury. With the Cardinal offense bearing down, Park came in and saved seven hard CUA shots on almost one leg. Finally at 39:26, Owen Thomas (Albany, N.H./Kennett) was able to shoot it by Park off of a pass from freshman Matt Brady (Woodbridge, Va./Potomac) on the left side. The Cards ended the half up 1-0 with 11 shots on goal to the Pioneer's two.
The second half began as a back and forth game as both teams played physically but couldn't score. The Pioneers inserted their third keeper at the break giving Park's leg a rest. In the 73rd minute a foul in the box by Columbia Union resulted in a penalty kick for the Cardinals which Brady connected on to go up 2-1.
Already upset because of earlier calls, a foul in the box and second penalty kick for Brady at 75:30 was the final straw for the Pioneer coaching staff. After Brady hit his second goal of the afternoon to put the Cards up 3-0 Columbia Union walked off of the field in protest to the refereeing.
The game was officially abandoned at 77:30 giving CUA the victory.
The Cardinals outshot the Pioneers 29-6 and took seven corner kicks to Columbia Union's one. CUA keeper Joe Schettino was rarely challenged but did have four saves for the afternoon.
CUA will travel to Mary Washington on Wednesday for a conference game beginning at 3:00 p.m.
