#3 York Defeats CUA 2-1
YORK, Pa. - Despite a major discrepancy in number of shots, the CUA Cardinal men's soccer squad (3-8-2, 1-4-1 CAC) only lost 2-1 to the undefeated #3 York College Spartans (14-0-1, 6-0 CAC). The Cards were able to use a stingy defense to disrupt the Spartans never allowing York to get into a rhythm.
A direct kick at 32:47 gave York its first goal of the afternoon as Justin Suchoski headed in the ball inside the right post with Matt Beale on the assist. This made the score 1-0 which would remain through the rest of the first half.
Ten minutes into the second, Travis Williams served up a ball to the middle of the box for Andrew Wheeler who kicked it in past CUA kepper Joe Schettino (Easton, Conn./Joel Barlow) to go ahead 2-0.
As the Cardinals continued with their disruptive defense, the offensive side finally began to work last in the second stanza when freshman Brian Pappas (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) knocked in his second goal of the season. David Hidalgo (Bethesda, Md./St. John's College) tapped it to Pappas who shot a long ball from outside the box into the upper right corner of the net. With the Cards unable to notch another score, Pappas' goal made the final 2-1.
The Spartans accumulated 26 shots to CUA's seven but only took one corner kick while the Cards attempted none. Schettino had nine saves to York's two.
The Cardinals will be at home this Tuesday against Washington College. The game is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.
