Cardinals Fall to Gophers
CUA drops 2-0 game to Goucher on Senior Day
WASHINGTON - Catholic University men's soccer (3-10-2, 1-5-1 CAC) fell 2-0 Saturday afternoon to the Goucher Gophers (9-7, 3-4 CAC) in their final home contest of the 2006 season. CUA played Goucher closely in the stats but one goal and one penalty kick put the Gophers on top at the end of 90 minutes.
Goucher score in the first half in the 32nd minute. Eddie Emokpae took a cross near midfield and showed a dazzling display of footwork as he weaved down to 15 yards out before shooting past Cardinal keeper Joe Schettino (Easton, Conn./Joel Barlow) to the back of the net.
In the second half, CUA had a number of chances to score including one open shot by senior Daniel Clifford (Marlton, N.J./Holy Cross) on the right side which went high. At 67:38 Gary Decker was awarded a penalty kick after a foul in the box which he converted into the left corner to go up 2-0.
This would prove to be the final as CUA was unable to get on the boarding the final 20 minutes. Goucher had 14 shots to Catholic University's 12, but CUA took 3 corner kicks while the Gophers only had two. Schettino had five saves for the afternoon.
The Cardinals will travel to St. Mary's on Wednesday for their final game of the season. The contest is slated to begin at 3:00 p.m.
