CUA Falls in CAC Quarterfinal
Daniel Clifford scores in his last intercollegiate game
FREDRICKSBURG, Va. - The Catholic University men's soccer squad lost 6-1 in the first round of the CAC tournament to the number two seed Mary Washington Eagles (13-4) Sunday afternoon. Playing a man down a majority of the game due to a red card, the Cardinals were unable to stop the Eagles' potent offense. The game also marks the last of the fall for CUA who finishes the season 3-11-3.
The Eagles hit their first score at 7:34 on an unassisted shot by Ryan Snyder. On the goal, goalkeeper Joe Schettino (Easton, Conn./Joel Barlow) was given a red card resulting in an ejection. The Cards were then forced to substitute in Bill Frame (Hockessin, Del./Salesianum) and play a man down.
With the advantage, the Eagle offense took it to CUA scoring three more goals in the first half including one by Tommy Park who also had an assist and another by Snyder.
In the second half, the Cardinals were able to slow the Eagles down allowing just two goals and putting in one of their own. At 70:42, Owen Thomas (Albany, N.H./Kennett) took a corner kick sailing the ball directly into the box. Senior captain Daniel Clifford (Marlton, N.J./Holy Cross) was there to knock it in scoring a goal in his final game at CUA. Mary Washington netted its final goal at 75:04 making the final 6-1.
