Hampden-Sydney Men's Soccer Overwhelms CUA

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Sept. 17, 2006) - Catholic University men's soccer (1-3-1, 0-1 CAC) beaten 3-2 by the Hampden-Sydney Tigers (4-1-1) at DuFour Field Saturday afternoon.  Both teams attacked in the second half, but in the end the Tigers came out victorious.

After a scoreless first half, Hampden-Sydney connected early in the second on a goal by Jason Powell.  CUA tied it up at 63:15 when a trip in the box resulted in a Matt Brady (Woodbridge, Va./Potomac) penalty kick making the score 1-1.

Unfortunately, the Tigers got a burst of momentum around the 75th minute and David Burley found the back of the net to go ahead.  Just two minutes later, Burley again was on the scoring side of a goal to put the Cardinals in the hole 3-1.

Senior captain Daniel Clifford (Marlton, N.J./Holy Cross) had a goal at 80:34 to put the Cards within one, but time ran out before they could strike making the final 3-2.

CUA had nine shots to Hampden-Sydney's 15.  Corner kicks were 8-5 in favor of the Tigers.  Cardinal keeper Joe Schettino (Easton, Conn./Joel Barlow) had seven saves for the afternoon.

The Cardinals will be on the road this Tuesday with contest at Marymount.
