Cardinals Shutout La Roche 4-0
Pappas scores two goals on the day
FROSTBURG, Md. - The Catholic University men's soccer team regrouped after a tough loss in their season opener to shutout the La Roche Redhawks, 4-0, Saturday afternoon at the Frostburg State Tournament. The win gave new head coach Travis Beauchamp his first of the season. Three players were named to the all-tournament team. Matt Brady (Woodbridge, Va./Potomac), Quinn Daly (San Diego, Calif./St. Augustine) and Brian Pappas (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) were all honored for their contributions.
It was scoreless after the first 45 minutes of play as both squads were putting together strong defensive games. After one half both teams had six shots but Cardinal keeper Daly was only forced to save one ball as opposed to La Roche's five.
The second half was a different story as junior Josh Harris (Fairfax, Va./Woodson) stepped up and netted the first goal of the game at 53:45 to make it 1-0. After his unassisted score the goals just kept coming for the Cardinals as the offensive remained on target. Sophomore Pappas notched his first goal of the day at 69:55. Pappas managed to get the ball past keeper DiLorenzo Camillo on the penalty kick making the score 2-0. Brady then connected on his first goal of the season on an unassisted run at 83:23. Just five minutes later Pappas put an exclamation point on the victory with a goal from Brady making the final 4-0.
Quinn got the win in goal as well as his first shutout notching four saves, Camillo had five saves but the loss. The Cards outshot the Redhawks 17-11 and held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The Cardinals will have the week off before returning to the pitch next Saturday at the Virginia Wesleyan Tournament. CUA will face the host Marlins at 2 p.m.
