Mariners Sink Cardinals in Landmark
Four first-half goals too much for Cards
KINGS POINT, N.Y. - In its opening game of Landmark Conference play, the Catholic University men's soccer squad (3-5, 0-1 Landmark) fell 5-2 to the United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners (4-4, 1-1 Landmark). The game was also significant for CUA head coach Travis Beauchamp as it was his first trip back to King's Point after taking the job at CUA, Beachamp was an assistant coach with the Mariners for three years.
USMMA struck early and often in the first half putting up three goals less than ten minutes into the game. Kyle Luetien, scored just two minutes in off of a pass from Clint Foster. Less than a minute later Rusty Denson hit an unassisted score to make it 2-0 before Chris Flanagan headed in a throw-in during the seventh minute.
The Cardinal defense regrouped and allowed just one more goal of the half but CUA was looking at a 4-0 deficit. Finally in the 36th minute, CUA finally got on the board when Owen Thomas (Albany, N.H./Kennett) found Brian Pappas (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) to trim the lead to three before the break.
The second half started like the first for the Cards as USMMA came out and immediately scored thanks to Flanagan's second tally of the day. However, this time the Cardinals stopped the Mariner momentum and held them the remainder of the contest. Matt Brady (Woodbridge, Va./Potomac) hit an unassisted goal at 63:52 but it was all the Cardinal offense could produce as CUA fell 5-2.
Despite USMMA's quick goals, the teams played fairly evenly with the Mariners taking just one more shot that the Cards 11-10. Both teams were also awarded two corner kicks each and had three saves on the day. Quinn Daly (San Diego, Calif./St. Augustine) took the loss after 46 minutes in goal with one save, Joe Schettino (Easton, Conn./Joel Barlow) entered in relief and posted a save.
The Cards will travel across town on Thursday to take on local rival, Gallaudet at 4 p.m.
