Missed Opportunities Hurt Cards
CUA falls to host Marlins
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Catholic University men's soccer team (1-2) had its chances Saturday against the Virginia Wesleyan Marlins (3-0). But time and time again the Cards couldn't connect falling 3-0 to the hosts of the Adidas Tournament. The defeat dropped CUA to 1-2 on the season.
The Cardinals held the advantage in almost every category but couldn't find the back of the net at the end of the day. VWU's Adam Beck put two quick scores on the board in the first half when he struck from ten yards out at 23:55. Just two minute later Beck tallied another taking the cross from Brandon Massie in the middle of the field and sliding it past Cardinal keeper Quinn Daly (San Diego, Calif./St. Augustine) to make it 2-0 at the half.
The Marlin connected on one more midway through the second half as Massie scored on the run to make the score and final 3-0. Despite the VWU goals, CUA outshot them 14-13 and with seven shots on goal. The Cards also had ample opportunity on corner kicks holding a 10-6 advantage. Daly was given the loss for CUA with four saves.
The Cardinals will be back in action on day two of the tournament on Sunday. CUA will face Randolph Macon at noon to finish out the weekend.
