Men's Soccer Falls in Overtime to Susquehanna, 2-1

Men's Soccer Falls in Overtime to Susquehanna, 2-1

November 1, 2008

WASHINGTON-Falling to 11-5 for the season, CUA men's soccer lost a heartbreaker to Susquehanna, 2-1, in overtime, Saturday.  Kevin Duffy (Marlton, N.J./Bishop Eustace) notched the Cardinals only goal in the 85th minute.

Rhyan Nelson scored both goals for Susquehanna.  Nelson first opened the scoring in the 34th minute when Jim Robertiello found Nelson in front of the net without a defender.

CUA seemingly dominated all aspects of the game throughout the remainder of the first half and early in the second half.  It seemed as though the only thing the Cardinals failed to do was find the inside of the net.  A barrage of 14 shots over the 91 minutes would usually result in a high score or a high number of saves for the visiting keeper.  Today, the Cardinals seemed to just miss the outside of the posts and crossbar making B.J. Merriam's job just a bit easier.

As time was winding down in the second half the intensity of the game grew.  Three yellow cards were given, all in the second half, and two in the last 22 minutes of the contest.  21 second half fouls gave both teams many chances, but none were as big as the break that the Crusaders got only one minute into the extra session.

A ball bounced inside the box and the scramble was on.  A Susquehanna player found the ball and was fouled just feet from the net.  A penalty kick was awarded to the Crusaders and Nelson made no mistake, sealing the game for the visitors.  His kick was low to the keeper's right and quickly found the mesh.

Neither team seemed to enjoy the way the game ended, but as they shook hands after the game both could be heard wishing each other well in the playoffs and hoping for a rematch in the Landmark Championship game.

CUA will return to action Wednesday when the Cardinals will travel to Drew University to take on the No. 1 seeded Rangers who finished 14-2-2 overall and 6-0-1 in the conference.
