Brady and Duffy Spark Men's Soccer with 3-1 Win over Marymount (Va.)
WASHINGTON -- Matt Brady and Kevin Duffy led CUA men's soccer to a 3-1 non-league win over regional rival Marymount (Va.) Tuesday at the CUA Soccer Fields.
Leading the Cardinals (1-0) with two goals and six shots, Brady broke the game open with his first goal of the year in the 53rd minute and followed it with his second only 17 minutes later. Duffy added one goal on four shots for CUA.
Marymount's keeper, William Brahmstedt, made six saves on the day including a diving save in the 70th minute just before Brady's second goal. The Saints (0-1) managed only nine shots, forcing Quinn Daly to make five saves.
Duffy opened the scoring in the 26th minute, finding the back of the net after Brahmstedt made the initial save on a corner. Marymount answered with an equalizer in the 31st minute with a header from Philippe Millogo. The game remained tied at the break.
In the second half, CUA's leading scorer in 2008, Brady, found the back of the net (pictured below) after Brian Maher made a late cross off the end line, to take the lead. Brady then scored his second of the game after a handball afforded the Cardinals a free kick just outside the box. Brady quick-started play and beat a distracted goalie to the high right corner.
CUA will return to action on Saturday against Widener at Swarthmore College at 5 p.m. The Cardinals will then take on Swarthmore on Sunday at 5 p.m.
