Men's Soccer Wins First Landmark Conference Championship
with 3-0 Win over Scranton
WASHINGTON-- The CUA men's soccer team (16-3-1) defeated the University of Scranton (12-6-2) to earn the teams first ever Landmark Conference title as well as the first NCAA tournament berth in program history. The Cardinals defeated the Royals, 3-0.
Led by Matt Brady who took four shots in the game with one of them finding the back of the net, the Cardinals outshot the visitors 16-9 to earn the victory. Tyler Bills and Matt Hofrichter scored the teams other two goals.
University of Scranton keeper Brandon Dombrowski made eight saves in the contest, but the relentless attack of CUA kept him on his toes throughout the match.
Tyler Bills started the scoring early for the Cardinals as Michael DiMarco lofted a pass passed the defense and as the keeper inched out of the net, Bills read the move and chipped the ball just over the keepers head.
At the break the Cardinals led, 1-0 but less than 10 minutes into the second half, Matt Brady and Tim Brady virtually replayed the DiMarco to Bills play as Matt Brady chipped the ball over the keeper for the Cardinals second of the game and his 12th of the year.
Only 12 minutes later Matt Hofrichter drilled the ball off the keeper and chipped in the rebound to give CUA a 3-0 lead and insurance on its first conference championship title and first NCAA tournament berth.
The Cardinals will now await the NCAA announcement of the tournament field to learn when and where they will play their opening round match.
