CUA battles back to earn 1-1 decision at Drew
MADISON, N.J. – Nick Sylvester scored in the 88th minute
for CUA in its match at Drew, as the Cardinals battled the Rangers
to a 1-1 double overtime draw on Saturday. CUA runs its
unbeaten streak to six matches and now sits at 8-5-3 overall and
2-1-3 in the Landmark Conference.
"Overall, I'm pleased with the way things went
today," head coach Travis Beauchamp said afterwards.
"We really battled them in the second half. To be
honest, our first half wasn't great; I think the pace was
much faster than we would have wanted, but we really settled down
in the second half. Our guys have confidence and they just
continued to play and eventually we got a goal to tie
it."
The teams combined for 29 shots in the match, including 12 by the
Cardinals. CUA was awarded four corner kicks to the Rangers
eight, and in goal, Quinn Daly stopped one shot for the Cardinals
and Jeff Rogers sent back three shots for the home team.
Things didn't start well for CUA as Drew scored just 3:26
into the match as Adrian Kawuba put a rebound in past Daly for an
early Rangers lead.
The Cardinals took just two shots in the opening half, but they
regrouped at halftime and came out looking for a score.
CUA created many more chances for itself in the second half and
was finally able to break through at the 87:53 mark when Sylvester
found the back of the net to tie things at one and eventually send
the teams into overtime.
In the first extra session CUA outshot the Rangers 3-0, but was
unable to get the game-winner. Following a second scoreless
ten-minute session, the teams settled for a 1-1 draw.
"We had some good chances in the first overtime, but just
couldn't put one in," Beauchamp said. "This
is a game we could have won, but overall we'll take the
result. This was really a good team effort by our guys
today."
CUA has two regular season matches remaining, beginning on Tuesday
when the Cardinals travel to take on St. Mary's. Game
time is slated for 3:00. CUA will wrap up the regular season
on Saturday, October 30 with a trip to Pennsylvania to take on
Moravian.
"We're looking at the Moravian match as a
must-win," Beauchamp said. "Our guys have the
mentality and make-up to handle something like that, so we're
looking forward to it."
