Cardinals' win streak snapped by Mary Washington
FREDERICSKBURG, Va. – The CUA men's soccer team saw
its three-match win streak come to a close on Thursday afternoon as
the Cardinals dropped a tough 2-1 decision versus a strong Mary
Washington squad. CUA (4-3) was leading the Eagles 1-0 in the
first half but Mary Washington (4-0-1) scored two straight to snap
the Cardinals streak of three straight W's.
The game was tightly contested throughout with CUA totaling eight
shots and the Eagles registering seven. The Cardinals were
awarded nine corner kicks, while Mary Washington had only
three.
In goal for CUA Quinn Daly stopped two shots and Mary Washington
goalkeeper Hunter Wooten sent back three.
CUA was aggressive from the start, taking the game's first
three shots, including one by Ian Smith at the 10:04 mark that
found the back of the net to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.
Matt Hofrichter assisted on the score as CUA took an early
lead.
The next 25 minutes or so featured very few shots until Mary
Washington struck at the 36:50 mark when T.L. Tutor sent a shot
from the 18-yard line past Daly into the net to even things at
one.
The Cardinals were able to get off one more shot in the half,
which came from Brian Maher with under five to play, but Wootten
made the save, sending the teams into intermission knotted at
one.
The Eagles struck early in the second half when Tutor netted his
second score of the afternoon at the 48:57 mark off a Brian Sims
feed to make it a 2-1 game.
CUA continued to apply pressure as it searched for the equalizer,
receiving shots from Tyler Bills, Brian Maher and Smith in the next
30 minutes, but the Cardinals were unable to score.
CUA closes out its four-match road swing on Monday, September 20
when the Cardinals travel to New Jersey to take on
Rutgers-Camden. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:00.
