Cardinals keep it rolling with big offensive performance
WASHINGTON – CUA exploded for three second half goals on
Wednesday as the Cardinals raced past Goucher 4-1 at CUA Soccer
Field. The win extends CUA's unbeaten streak to six matches
and ups the Cardinals record to 8-5-2 overall and 2-1-2 in the
Landmark Conference.
CUA out shot the Gophers 24-4 on the afternoon and was awarded
nine corner kicks to Goucher's zero. Senior Quinn Daly picked up
the win in goal for the home team with one save, while Goucher
keeper Joe Kon sent back five shots.
CUA wasted little time in getting on the board as Kevin Duffy took a
feed from Kevin
Romano and chipped the ball into the back of the net for a 1-0
lead at the 4:49 mark.
Goucher came back and tied things at one however, when Adam Boyce
scored from close range at the 13:34 mark.
The game remained tied for the remainder of the opening 45
minutes, despite the Cardinals having several opportunities to
break the stalemate.
Early in the second half, CUA took the lead for good when Ian
Smith blasted a shot into the far corner of the net for a 2-1
Cardinals advantage. Less than four minutes later, the
Cardinals added to their lead when Hal Cogan knocked in a
deflected ball to make it a 3-1 game.
Brian Maher
then put the finishing touches on a strong performance for CUA with
his goal at the 84:50 mark. Tyler Bills assisted
on the score, which came from just in front of the net.
CUA will now hit the road for its final three matches of the
regular season, beginning on Saturday, October 23 when the
Cardinals head to New Jersey to take on Drew. Start time is
slated for 3:30.
