CUA heads to York, Pa., for NCAA Tournament

WASHINGTON – CUA heads to York, Pa., this weekend as the Cardinals begin play in the 2010 NCAA Tournament.  Fresh off its win in the Landmark Conference championship match, CUA will take on Ohio Wesleyan in the first round on Saturday, November 13.

The Cardinals enter this weekend on a roll, not having lost in their last 11 matches, dating back to September 25.  CUA defeated Merchant Marine Academy on the road in the conference championship match in a shootout on November 6 to earn its second consecutive Landmark Conference title, and with it, a bid to the NCAA Tournament.

CUA is surrendering 0.90 goals per game on the season, and during its 11-match unbeaten streak, has allowed a total of only five scores.  The Cardinals have also shut out six teams during that time.

Offensively CUA has used a good balance to generate goals throughout the year.  2010 conference rookie of the year Ian Smith leads the squad with nine goals and 19 points, with Mike Brennan (6 goals, 14 points) and Kevin Duffy (5 goals, 11 points) next in line.  Mike DiMarco is the team leader in assists with four, while Smith and Duffy are tied for the team lead in game-winning goals with three apiece.

Saturday is CUA's second NCAA Tournament appearance in school history following last year's match vs. Lynchburg on the campus of Christopher Newport.  The Cardinals fell to the Hornets that day by a 3-0 score.

CUA's opponent in the first round is quite familiar with NCAA play, as Ohio Wesleyan is making its record 33rd appearance in the tournament.  The Bishops, currently ranked 2nd in the country, are 16-1-2 overall and went 7-0-1 within the North Coast Atlantic Conference this season.

Ohio Wesleyan defeated Denison in its conference championship match by a score of 3-1 on November 6 and enters the NCAA Tournament having won eight straight.  The Bishops are led on offense by Tyler Wall who has scored 16 goals and 37 points.  He is one of 11 Ohio Wesleyan players with at least one goal, and has scored five game-winners.

The Bishops have outscored their opponents 47-8 in 2010 and outshot them 426 to 172.

CUA and Ohio Wesleyan will play the second semifinal contest on Saturday, at approximately 1:30, following the York – Kenyon match, which begins at 11:00 AM.  The winners of the two semifinal contests will then play on Sunday afternoon, again on the campus of York College, with the match slated for a 1:00 start.

Tickets for the matches are $6.00 for adult general admission, $3.00 for seniors (60 years and older), military personnel with photo ID, and students with school identification, and $2.00 for children ages 3 through 12.

York will provide free live video coverage as well as live stats of each match this weekend.  For more information, please visit the tournament homepage.
