WASHINGTON – CUA picked up its first win of the 2012-13 season on Thursday, downing St. Mary's 5-4 in a match that was postponed from September 8. The Cardinals received singles wins from Brian Bradley, Jason Quisberth and Schuyler Hayward and doubles points from Cassian Utrie and Bradley, as well as Joe Peters and Quisberth.
In singles action, Andrew Gear earned the first flight point by default for St. Mary's.
At the second flight, Bradley downed Mark Hardesty 7-5, 6-2, while Kyle Kramer fell to Kyle Feeley 6-3, 6-3 at the third flight.
Peters was upended by John Feighner 6-3, 6-4 at fourth singles, but CUA took the final two matches.
Quisberth came away with a hard-fought 6-3, 6-7, 6-4 win over Jay Guzzone at the fifth flight in what was the match of the day. Hayward then closed things out with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Wyatt Paulishak at sixth singles.
In doubles competition, Utrie and Bradley teamed up for an 8-2 win over Gear and Hardesty at the first flight, while Peters and Quisberth downed Guzzone and Paulishak 8-3 at the third flight.
The Seahawks lone doubles point came from Feeley and Feighner at the second flight 8-5.
CUA will be back in action on Sunday afternoon when the Cardinals head north to face Division I foe Loyola (Md.). Start time is set for 1:30 p.m.
