Marty Dowd Named CAC Coach of the Year
Marty Dowd (Burtonsville, Md.) has been named conference Men's Tennis Coach of the Year for a second time.
Dowd, who just completed his 38th year at Catholic University, led the Cardinals to a 13-4 record. The team finished third at the CAC Championships last weekend in Salisbury, Md., and is 27-7 (.794) over the past two seasons.
Dowd, the winningest coach in Cardinal athletic department history, has a career record of 391-278-1 (.584). He received his first CAC Coach of the Year honor in 1994.
After playing tennis for four years at CUA, Dowd graduated in 1960 with a degree in art. He posted an overall record of 48-5 and led the club to a 15-0 record as a senior.
Dowd is the fifth Cardinal coach to garner conference Coach of the Year honors in 1999-2000. He joins football coach Tom Clark (Old Dominion Athletic Conference), Nagy Abdelrazek (volleyball), Mike Lonergan (men's basketball) and Tom Calomeris (men's swimming).
2000 Season Preview
It would normally be difficult to ask a team to improve upon a 14-3 record, but Cardinal men's tennis Coach Marty Dowd feels that his 38th team at Catholic has the talent and depth to do so. He is looking for the Cardinals to improve upon their fifth-place finish at the conference Championships and tie or beat the school record of wins in a season (15).
Senior Matt Burke and junior Steve Balshi - who shared team Most Valuable Players honors last year - headline the cast of returnees with Rookie of the Year, sophomore Donald Polifka, and 1997-98 MVP, senior Doug Rowe. They will be joined by sophomore Steve Testa, junior Martin Locraft and sophomores Michael Hedge, Chad Dixon and Matt O'Hearn.
A talented freshmen class, led by P.J. Bautista, Jon Wanders, Russell Bryan, Pat Rose and Aaron Slominski, will compete for starting positions and give the Cards what Dowd thinks will be a deeper team in 1999-2000. The squad faces another challenging schedule, including its annual spring-break trip to Hilton Head, S.C., and the Georgetown University Tournament in the fall.
