Team sets school record with 17 wins
The Catholic University men's tennis team has won a school-record 17 matches. The Cardinals (17-2) eclipsed the mark with their 16th win, a 5-2 victory against Goucher on April 10. CUA defeated Division I rival Loyola (Md.) 5-2 Tuesday and has won 13 in a row.
Junior Deke Polifka (Beaver Dam, Va./Patrick Henry High) has a record of 16-2 playing No. 1 singles. Steve Balshi (Gwynedd, Pa./La Salle) is 15-3 at No. 2 singles.
Coach Marty Dowd (Burtonsville, Md.) notched his 400th career victory in the Cards' 4-3 win over Salisbury State on March 12. It was CUA's first win over the Sea Gulls since 1988.
Dowd, completing his 39th year at his alma mater, sports a career record of 408-280-1 (.593). His teams are 44-9 (.830) over the past three seasons.
