Cardinals Nab First Landmark Victory
Dillon goes 2-0 for the day
WASHINGTON - The Catholic University men's tennis team got its first conference win of the season Saturday with a 6-3 victory over Moravian College (1-2-1) at the DuFour Center. The powerful middle of the lineup proved to be too much for the Greyhounds as CUA won improving to 6-2 overall and 1-0 in the Landmark Conference where it were selected first in the preseason poll.
In singles play, spots two, three and four all came out on top to bolster the Cardinal lead. John Dillon (River Forest, Ill./Fenwick) won at two singles 6-0, 6-1. Mike Schinella (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep) and Rich Sheaffer (Warrenton, Va./Fauquier) both had closer matches but eventually battled to victory. Schinella won 6-2, 7-6 at the three spot and Scheaffer won 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 in the fourth. Rounding out singles winners was Connor Donnelly (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) who won at number six 6-1, 6-3.
In double, the number one team of Dillon and Andrew Kracht (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) were victorious 9-7. Donnelly and Sheaffer in the third position also go the win 8-1.
The Cards will host York College of Pennsylvania on Tuesday at 3:15 p.m.
