MADISON, N.J. - The Catholic University men's tennis team (11-6) dropped a tough 8-1 decision to the Drew University Rangers (11-6) Saturday in the Landmark Conference Championship. The second-seeded Cardinals battled but were unable to overtake the top-seeded Rangers that had previously blanked CUA in the regular season.
In singles, Connor Donnelly (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) was the lone winner on the day. The freshman defeated his opponent 7-4, 6-6 to get the victory. At both number one and two, CUA won a set but couldn't pull out the point. At number one, first team all-conference Andrew Kracht (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) lost the first set 7-6 but won the second 6-1 before falling in the tiebreaker 10-6. At the number two position, second team all-conference performer John Dillon (River Forest, Ill./Fenwick) also took a set winning the first 6-3 before dropping the second two 6-1, 10-8.
In doubles play, the Rangers swept the Cardinals to get all three points. At number three, Donnelly and Rich Sheaffer (Warrenton, Va./Fauquier) had the closest match falling 8-4.
The Cardinals finish the season at 11-6 overall after a successful spring season.
