Men's Tennis Continues to Roll 9-0, 8-1
WASHINGTON-- The Catholic University Men's Tennis team have gone 3-2 in the month of April so far after getting off to a slow start. More recently they beat both Lancaster Bible College on Friday, April 17th and Susquehanna University on Saturday, April 18th by a count of 9-0, 8-1, respectively. The 8-1 victory against Susquehanna marked Senior Day for one Cardinal, Luigi Alvarado (Lima/Peru) and moves the Red and Black to 7-9 overall and 2-4 in Landmark play this season.
Friday's match with Lancaster Bible was a great day for Cardinal Tennis as both singles and doubles matches were swept by Catholic and several players stepped up for Coach Dowd. Including Fr. Mathew Netardus (Virginia Beach, Va.), who defeated his singles opponent 6-0, 6-2 and went on to team up with Kevin Melo (Beltsville, Md.) in a doubles win, 8-3. Sr. Luigi Alvardo (Lima, Peru) also counted for a singles win 6-0, 6-0 to move to 5-4 on the 2009 season thus far.
Senior Day was more of the same from the Cardinals as they were able to sweep the singles matched and take two out of three in doubles. Conner Donnelly (Long Island, N.Y) counted for a singles win after battling hard against Cory Prescott taking his opponent to the tie-breaker before defeating Prescott 4-6, 6-2, 10-4. Puerto Rico native Jean Paul Roman managed to get his fifth win of the season after defeating his opponent by a count of 6-0, 6-1.
Coach Dowd and his squad will look to finish the season strong as they will host USMMA next Saturday, April 25th. The match is scheduled to begin at 12:00 pm and will take place at the Tennis courts at DuFour Center.
